Winter isn't that hard where I'm from, in Yunmeng, but I know winter is very hard in other areas of China. It can't hurt to be prepared for the worst. I have been here for the summer and the summer was very different from the ones at home.

Of course there are people in China! Some areas have more problems with resentful energy than others but I'm sure it's not worse than anywhere else in the world.

I hope this place, for all its own horrors, can be a reprieve to let you recover and gather your strength.

by the way, what's a cultivator?

We are people, usually swordfighters, who "cultivate" our qi through training so we can use spiritual energy. What we do is not magic but it is easiest to describe as magic to people who aren't familiar with it.

ok so kind of like warrior mages? I think I get that. we have something similar in our time, just without swords.

We don't have warrior mages at home but it sounds about right.

We deal with trouble common people aren't equipped for, problems of the supernatural sort.

we don't exactly have specifically warrior mages, either. we have mages, and they often work alongside hunters and cleansers to beat back the dangers of the silent world. I don't know who of my crew you have met here, but Emil is a cleanser and Lalli is a mage. I'm a hunter. but don't let the word mage fool you. Lalli is plenty good in a fight, if it comes to that.

I suppose we do the same, though cultivators are less specialized. Each of us has to do all these things though different sects - different groups - of us each have their strengths in different fields.

I myself am most comfortable in battle, when I'm fighting with the sword and whip.

I've never met anyone who fights with a whip before. I usually favor knives and guns, but guns can be dangerous because the noise draws the wrong kind of attention more often than not.

Guns, these are with black powder, right? That would be loud.

We mostly use whips as secondary weapons along with our swords. The whip I use isn't a regular one, it is a spiritual whip made of lightning, but I wouldn't mind displaying it for you. The technique remains mostly the same.

that's right. they make silencers which muffle the sound, but it's impractical to arm an entire military with them. so, guns are usually a last resort.

I'd be interested in seeing it. I've never seen a spiritual/lightning any kind of weapon before. I'd like to see it in action.

I go often to the swamp to keep my fighting skills honed. We could go together sometime.

I'd like that. I've been meaning to scout the area a little better. I haven't been here long enough to really get a good lay of the land yet, and relying on my crew to fill me in doesn't seem fair.

I've been here since summer. I don't focus on exploration or cartographing so much as that I explore while I go hunting but I know my way around by now.

I'll show you what I know.
